As wheelbuilders we get to assist our customers in tailoring their new wheels to play to their strengths and of course to work within their budgets. It can of course get a bit confusing with all these geeky options so we’ve put together this guide.
All our spokes are Belgian made Sapim (except two - the PSR AERO 1432 and PSR AERO 1422, more on those in a moment). We use the black version of these spokes as standard on all our builds.
ALL OUR SPOKES AND HUBS ARE BLACK UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED
This is the standard ‘go-to’ high quality spoke known for its strength and rigidity of build. Not the lightest but ideal for even the heaviest of riders - and the mechanics favourite to work with. Ideal for both Rim brake and Disc wheels: http://www.sapim.be/spokes/butted/race
This is a very light double-butted spoke known for giving a cushioned ride. A similar price to the Race spoke. It’s very strong but we use it only for riders under 85kg due to the lateral flex it brings to a wheel when used by heavier riders. It’s also much harder to work with than the Race spoke and can only be worked on by pro mechanics. Too lightweight for Disc brake usage: http://www.sapim.be/spokes/butted/laser
The best spoke in the world full stop. The pro’s choice: Superbly light, It’s also the most aerodynamic bladed spoke available. And there’s more. It also is unique in strength and elastic responsiveness. Not cheap of course but a sound investment if you can afford it. If you can make this upgrade you really will see where your money is going! Ideal for both Rim brake and Disc wheels http://www.sapim.be/spokes/aero/cx-ray
Psr Aero 1432
The first of 2 non-sapim spokes we use. Its strikingly aero at 3.2 mm across. It is also very strong. Not the lightest but ..... Looks fantastic and is very fast. Ideal for all weights of rider. For Rim brake usage only as Disc hubs are not drilled for aero bladed spokes
Just one thing: If you choose the PSR Aero 1432 you have to pair it with our formula hubs. This is because the blade is so wide that the spoke holes in the hub have to be specially engineered (slotted) to allow spokes to be inserted and Formula are able to do this for us! The combination of this hubset and spokes does make the wheels a bit heavier - but the hubs are great and the result is super aero! http://www.pillarspoke.com/p03-4_psr_aero.htm
Psr Aero 1422
The second of 2 non-sapim spokes we use. The 1422 aero spoke is aero at 2.2 x 0.9mm and very light at 4.7 grams. It is known as the affordable economic equivalent of the CXRAY spoke - which costs twice as much and is in our view the worlds best spoke. The 1422 is a superb aero/light spoke for the budget conscious http://www.pillarspoke.com/p03-5_psr_x-tra.htm
Hub choice is all about: weight/engineering/durability/price/bearing quality.
We use only high quality hubs of course as they do a heavy use job. Especially in the UK with its challenging roads and weather.
ALL OUR HUBS ARE SEALED CARTRIDGE TYPE AND ALWAYS HAVE BEEN!
Our Favourite lightweight high quality hubset. We always think that these hubs should cost twice the price! I should say that quietly or Bitex will hear! Taiwanese made and incredibly reliable. All hubs have high end features like 6-drive hubs and anti-bite guard. We use these on builds for all but the heaviest of riders!
Miche /Ambrosio Hubs
These are the standard hubs on most of our builds. We love them. Both are Italian made and are mechanics favourites as they are so easy to maintain and service.
The Miche Primato hub is our first choice for heavier riders too as it features an incredibly strong steel axle and just does not flex under any load.
DT Swiss Hubs
The pinnacle of hub choice options. Swiss precision engineering at its finest and with a uniquely engineered approach. They are endlessly durable and reliable. Note they are quite loud!
The 350 is not the lightest hubset (on a par with our Miche hubs and heavier than Bitex. Its the Swiss precision engineering that carries the price tag.
The DT Swiss 240 hubs (both in rim brake and disc brake versions) are the top of the food chain. Light, fantastically engineered, and go on for countless years.
Being Swiss you could say they are literally like a Rolex for your wheels - though priced a little more kindly.
Double sealed, and used specifically with our super aero 3.2mm bladed spokes these are a reliable and fast rolling hubset from Taiwanese brand Formula. Not the lightest with their super strong steel freehub - we use these on wheel builds that are aero first and foremost where weight is less of a consideration.
